Fair Trade Cameroon African Fang Ngil Mask 24-26″ Tall, PM10.24673

$109.25

Description

You will receive a mask of similar motif, with bold geometric designs, and striking polychrome colors, such as gold, royal blue, and terra cotta, alternating with black and white, each the unique creation of an individual carver. No two are identical! Please keep in mind every mask is uniquely handcarved and differs in design. Fang masks like these were originally used by the Ngil society in Cameroon, Gabon and Equatorial Guinea. Fang masks were one of the African art forms that inspired Pablo Picasso’s work in Cubism. Traditional Ngil masks were used by officials during the persecution of criminals as well as during the initiation ceremonies of young men. Ngil masks were banned by French colonialists in 1910; however the masks have returned in various forms. Some masks may show a dark patina, including African repairs.
